How This Calculator Works
We want to be completely transparent about how every number is calculated. There is nothing hidden in this tool.
Amazon Referral Fees
Amazon charges a referral fee on every sale โ this is their commission for providing the marketplace. The fee is a percentage of the total sale price (including item price, but typically excluding shipping and gift wrap). Amazon has a minimum referral fee of $0.30 per item regardless of percentage.
Our calculator uses Amazon's published referral fee rates by category. Common rates:
| Category | Referral Fee Rate | Minimum Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Home & Kitchen, Outdoors, Sports | 15% | $0.30 |
| Consumer Electronics | 8% | $0.30 |
| Beauty & Health | 8% | $0.30 |
| Apparel | 17% | $0.30 |
| Jewelry | 20% | $0.30 |
| Toys & Games | 15% | $0.30 |

FBA Fulfillment Fees
Amazon's FBA fulfillment fee covers picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns handling for your orders. The fee is determined by the size tier of your packaged product.
Size tiers are based on the dimensions and weight of your product as packaged and ready for shipment. The key tiers are:
| Size Tier | Max Weight | FBA Fee (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Small Standard | Up to 16 oz | $3.06 โ $3.38 |
| Large Standard | Up to 20 lb | $3.52 โ $7.17 |
| Large Bulky | Up to 50 lb | $9.73+ |
| Extra-Large | Up to 70 lb | $26.33+ |
Note: FBA fees are updated by Amazon periodically. The figures shown in our calculator are based on Amazon's most recently published fee schedule. Confirm your product's specific fee in Amazon Seller Central's FBA Revenue Calculator.
Profit Margin Formula
Our calculator uses standard financial formulas:
These are standard accounting formulas used in commerce. Profit margin shows what percentage of revenue is profit. ROI shows return relative to what you invested in the product.
Calculator Limitations โ What We Do Not Include Automatically
In the interest of full transparency, here is what this calculator does not automatically calculate:
- Monthly Storage Fees: Amazon charges $0.75/cubic foot (standard, JanโSep) or $2.40/cubic foot (OctโDec, peak season). Add your estimated storage cost per unit in the "Other Costs" field.
- Long-Term Storage Fees: Products stored over 365 days incur additional fees. This is not included.
- PPC / Advertising Costs: Amazon advertising spend is not included. Use our TACoS Calculator to factor in ad spend.
- Returns and Refunds: Use the "Other Costs" field to add an estimated per-unit return cost if relevant.
- Platform Fee: Amazon Professional Seller account costs $39.99/month. Divide by your monthly units to get a per-unit cost and add it to "Other Costs".
Frequently Asked Questions
Most successful FBA sellers target a net profit margin of 20โ30% or higher. A margin below 15% becomes risky because there is little buffer for PPC costs, fee increases, or returns. If your margin is below 10%, it is worth reconsidering your pricing, supplier cost, or product selection before scaling.
Amazon's FBA fees jump significantly between size tiers. A product that is just slightly too large or heavy to qualify as "Small Standard" might pay $3.77 instead of $3.38 โ a difference that compounds significantly at scale. Some experienced sellers actually redesign their packaging to qualify for a lower size tier.
This calculator focuses on per-unit product profitability without advertising. To properly account for advertising, use our TACoS Calculator, which is designed specifically to show how your ad spend affects overall business profitability.
Profit Margin is net profit as a percentage of your selling price. ROI (Return on Investment) is net profit as a percentage of what you invested (your COGS and shipping). For example: if you sell a product for $30, your COGS is $8, and net profit is $10, your margin is 33% but your ROI is 125%. Both metrics matter โ ROI is especially important when thinking about how efficiently your capital is working.
